Port Huron Northern Band Fundraising for New Uniforms

The band hopes to raise $50,000 by February 28, 2018.

The Port Huron Northern band program has a long, proud legacy for Port
Huron Schools and over 200 students currently participating in this popular organization. Band Director Erick Senkmajer has seen tremendous growth in both student participation and scheduled performances by the band since his leadership of the program began.

“The band has nearly doubled in size since the last time uniforms were purchased 12 years ago,” explained Senkmajer. “We have had generous support from our Band Boosters throughout the years, but rather than continuing to invest thousands each year into uniforms that are now nearing end-of-life, which is typically 12 to 16 years, we think we should be investing in the future of the program. Our uniforms are in heavy rotation due to the number of students in the program and the heavy performance schedule we maintain. To accommodate the fast growth of the program, we purchased many less expensive, less durable basic black uniforms, but this has resulted in the band having a very divided look. We would like our students to be able to present themselves visually as well as they do musically. These are great kids who serve the entire community with their dedication to the program.”

The band has a website detailing the progress and purpose of the fundraising. Senkmajer is hopeful that the funding will be completed by the deadline of February 28, 2018. “We plan to place an order in April 2018. It is important that we are successful with our goal, the uniforms are a necessity.” It is important to note that the recently passed bond cannot fund items such as uniforms and is limited to “capital investments” such as facilities and equipment.
“Port Huron Northern and Port Huron High Schools’ bands are a source of pride for the entire community,” said Superintendent Jamie Cain. “It’s important that we support our students as they perform throughout the year and play for many prestigious contests and venues, representing our community and district.”

Donors can participate in funding the band uniforms via an online form or sending a check made out to “PHN Bands” to P.O. Box 596036, Ft. Gratiot, MI 48059. Donations are tax deductible.
