PHN Morning Announcements - February 23, 2022
February is Black History Month!
Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first Black female doctor in the United States.
After attending the prestigious Massachusetts private school West-Newton English and Classical School, she worked as a nurse for eight years until applying to medical school in 1860 at the New England Female College. She was accepted and would go on to graduate four years later.
Though little known is known of her career, PBS reported that she worked as a physician for the Freedmen’s Bureau for the State of Virginia. She later practiced in Boston’s predominantly Black neighborhood at the time, Beacon Hill, and published “A Book of Medical Discourses in Two Parts”.
We will conclude with a quote by Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler: “Selfish prudence is too often allowed to come between duty and human life”.
On behalf of embRACE club, Happy Black History Month.

Congratulations to the Northern Bands that have had a busy few weeks of Competition!
This last weekend our Winter drum line earned first place in their first competition of the season in Lakeland and our color guard earned a spot on the podium with a 3rd place finish out of 7 guards in *their* first competition in Milford.
The week prior, over forty students in twenty of events performed at the District solo and ensemble in Imlay City.
All of the events earned medal placements, and most earned an invitation to state solo and ensemble festival in March. Congratulations!
Next week, all three concert bands will be headed to festival in North Branch for the first time in 2 years.
If you would like to know when and where to see any of these groups perform, you can find out on our Google Calendar at phnbands.org
